Potassium nitrate or saltpetre is the potassium salt of nitric acid, which chemical formula is: KNO3;
It’s a colourless, water-soluble crystalline, and an oxidizing agent which can be used in the preparation of solid propellants.
The product is classified dangerous in accordance with the provisions of Directives 67/548/EEC and 1999/45/EC and/or Regulation (EC) 1272/2008 (CLP) (as amended and adapted).
At room temperature it is a colourless crystalline solid with a slightly bitter taste, soluble in water.
Also commonly known as saltpetre or nitro, it is an oxidizing agent and as such is the component of the black powder that provides oxygen to the mixture.

Residues of the product are to be considered dengerous special waste. The danger nature of waste containing this product must be assessed in accordance with current legislation.
